Project Description
Every January, thousands of volunteers across Asia and Australasia visit wetlands in their countries and count water birds. This citizen science program is the Asian Water Bird Census (AWC). The AWC is an integral part of the global water bird monitoring program, the International Water Bird Census (IWC), coordinated by Wetlands International. It runs in parallel with other regional programmes of the International Waterbird Census in Africa, Europe, West Asia, the Neotropics and the Caribbean. The AWC was initiated in 1987 in the Indian subcontinent and since has grown rapidly to cover major regions of Asia, from Afghanistan eastwards to Japan, Southeast Asia and Australasia. In Kerala, WWF-India has been the coordinating agency since 2015 in Thiruvananthapuram District.
