The Asian Waterbird Census (AWC) is a component of the global International Waterbird Census (IWC), a citizen-science program dedicated to supporting the conservation and management of wetlands and waterbirds worldwide. WWF-India, Kerala State Office, in collaboration with the Kollam Birding Battalion, with the support of the Social Forestry Division of the Kerala Forest Department, has been coordinating the AWC in the Kollam District of Kerala since 2015. The involvement of volunteers, including bird identification experts, photographers, and other enthusiasts, has helped it turn into a successful Citizen Science initiative. It is especially impressive that many volunteers have progressed from budding birders to expert birders and even conservation enthusiasts.
