Project Description
The “Bear Brother” initiative is a community-based conservation program under the larger project Human–Brown Bear Interaction Study and Bear Ecology Changes in Kargil, aimed at promoting coexistence between people and Himalayan brown bears. It engages local volunteers as a bridge between communities and the Wildlife Department, supporting patrolling, sharing real-time information on bear movements, assisting with compensation processes, and contributing to ecological and socio-cultural surveys, thereby strengthening conflict mitigation, awareness, and long-term conservation efforts in the Kargil landscape
